Below
is an overview of the vintage from Derek Smedley, and his top wines
by appellation, with marks out of 100.
Very
few Masters of Wine have the experience that Derek can boast when
it come to evaluating this vintage. He well remembers tasting the
1961 vintage in the Spring of ’62 and, as you will read below,
sees comparisons with 2005.
The clarets
of 2005 will be in huge demand, and securing allocations of most
Chateaux will be tough.
There
have been a number of recent ‘Vintage of the Century’!
Has Bordeaux and the Trade being crying wolf too often? 2000 has
some great wines but it is acknowledged that 2001 produced wines
in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol that are as good or even better than
those of 2000. 2003 was hailed as an exceptional year but many of
the wines are untypical being too lush and now looking remarkably
forward. 1989 and 1990 are wonderful years as is 1982. But 2005,
I feel, stands out as exceptional. I liken it to 1961 and have not
been laughed out of court.
Why
so great?
Weather
had a great deal to do with it:-
Steady
& consistent bud burst.
Following
the cold and dry winter the weather was kind during the bud burst
period and there was no frost damage.
Rapid
& uniform flowering.
Summery
temperatures and a very dry period favoured a uniform and early
flowering.
Early
veraison
Ideal
summer temperatures with heat but not excessive heat lead to a widespread
changing of the skin colour during the second week of August.
Slow,
steady ripening
The beautiful
sunny weather in August, September and October with temperatures
1- 3 degrees higher than average, but without peaks of excessive
heat, produced berries high in sugar and polyphenols whilst at the
same time keeping a level of acidity that ensured freshness and
balance. Despite it being an excessively dry the year, the vine
root found some water and did not suffer from too much stress.
Ideal
conditions during the harvest
The harvest
dates were within the norm, taking place with ideal temperatures
and sunny conditions. There were only three storms between 15th
September and 15th October thus allowing the later ripening varieties
to reach perfection without damage. It was a small harvest made
even smaller by some necessary summer pruning.
All of
this has lead to an exceptional vintage with some wines as close
to perfection as one is likely to get. The wines are full of sweetness
with ripe, rounded yet firm tannins and a lovely freshness that
gives elegance even to the weightiest of wines.
But all
the wines are not like this as there are some that are green, over-concentrated,
over-extracted with bitter tannins and a dusty dryness. These faults
have come from trying too hard. The fruit was so perfect, sweet
and full of colour that there was no need to macerate for too long,
and fermentation temperatures needed to be kept low, no more than
28 rather than the more usual 32 degrees.
And
what of prices?
It
is difficult to say at this stage except but they will be up! Some
are talking about 20% more than 2000 and 2003, some are talking
double. One must always remember that there is still a quantity
of 2001, 2002 and 2004 in the cellars be it at the chateaux or with
the merchant and there will be the 2006 vintage to sell (it could
be another 1992!). Reason will perhaps prevail despite the USA being
a certain buyer (they did not buy much 2001, 2002 & 2004), and
the Far East and other countries such as Russia becoming hooked
on the region’s wines.
