"Matching wine with Italian Style Food"

Friday January 19th 2007 hosted by Mike and Josie Kirkham

A fantastic evening was enjoyed by the club at chez Kirkham.. Josie's cooking was up there with the best restaurants and Mike's knowledge and choice of wines made for a memorable evening. A special thanks to Mike's daughter Amanda who had the unenviable task of serving all of the wonderful food without actually getting a chance to eat any!!!

On arrival Proseco and assorted nibbles were served in the living room before moving through to the enormous kitchen for the eagerly awaited dinner and wine.

Each person was given 6 numbered wine glasses for them to try each wine with each course. (hic) The challenge was to work out which wine goes best with each course. The wines were kept secret until the end of the evening, when all was revealed….!

We started off with superb Antipasti, mixed grilled peppers, artichokes, assorted meats, with breads and Mike's collection of exotic (and expensive!) oils. This was followed by a wonderful wild mushroom risotto. This was creamy but not claggy like some risottos and had a intense flavour.

Next up, Smoked salmon, white wine, cream and asparagus with pasta. Again, full of flavour, beautifully cooked and presented. Just when we thought things couldn't get better, out came the fish wrapped in proscuitto and roasted with pesto and vine tomatoes. Another wonderful mixture of flavours. Then Mike's 'piece de resistance' - Slow cooked beef in Barolo. The meat was wonderfully tender having been soaked in Barrollo for two days and just melted in the mouth. Just when we thought there could be no more, the cheeseboard arrived! An excellent choice of cheeses was accompanied by coffee, or by Grappa for the brave
